Oprah's Harpo Productions Signs Deal with HBO

From Elizabeth Fry, About.com GuideDecember 18, 2008

Follow me on:

After a 15 year relationship with ABC, Oprah is moving her Harpo Productions contract to HBO.

Harpo Films and ABC produced television movies such as "Tuesday's with Morrie" and "Their Eyes Were Watching God" with Halle Berry. Instead of airing on the ABC networks, the Harpo Films will now run on HBO. Potential projects for the 3 year deal include mini-series, documentaries, movies and television series.

The relationship with a cable network instead of ABC will likely allow Oprah and Harpo more creative freedom to produce cutting edge film and discuss topics not suitable for primetime television. I look forward to seeing the outcome of this deal and the type of product the company will create - if it will remain like the films in the past, or move to more edgy material.

Have you enjoyed past Harpo Films and do you think the move to HBO will change the type of presentation we are used to seeing on ABC? Please share your thoughts in the comment section below.
