For Earth Day 2009, Oprah welcomed guests to the show to demonstrate how viewers can easily go green and save money. If you think "going green" is a difficult switch or will cost you more to buy environmentally-friendly products, today's guests provided a number of easy solutions that any family can make in a matter of minutes.

Some of the ideas suggested on today's show included: switching to CF light bulbs, using a water-filtration pitcher, reaching for cloth kitchen towels instead of paper, and buying energy-efficient appliances. Also on today's show, viewers were given information on the Great Pacific Garbage Patch - a stretch of sea double the size of Texas and 90 feet deep in the Pacific Ocean which is covered with garbage. This is not the only patch of trash affecting sea life, only the largest. Until today's show, this was an issue I was not fully aware of, and I'm sure many people watching felt the same way. In addition to making your house more green and doing your part to help the world's sea life, tips for how to eat green were also provided. A simple solution that will make a big impact on the world's resources? Meatless Monday. Cutting out meat for just one day out of the week would not only improve your health, but make a large impact on your carbon footprint.

Did you learn new tips that you will implement into you daily life from today's show? What did you do to go green on Earth Day 2009? Please share your thoughts in the comment section below.

Prior to today’s Opah show, did you really think trash in the ocean wasn’t a problem? SAD

Ocean waste is a huge problem, but, you completely mis-characterize the problem by implying it is a mound of plastics twice the size of Texas and 90 feet deep. The problem is mostly small particulate, not solid floating waste (which would actually be easier to clean up) And it is on the verge of deception to describe it the way you do, which paints an inaccurate distorted version of the truth.
