Oprah - Good for Bestsellers, Not So for Box Office
When Oprah attaches her name to a product, any product, sales usually skyrocket.
A prime example is the most recent list of top-selling paperbacks as reported by Entertainment Weekly. Of the top 10, 2 are on Oprah's book club list, and 2 authors have been guests on The Oprah Winfrey Show. Elizabeth Gilbert's Eat Pray Love was a focus of 2 episodes and holds the #1 spot. Jon Krakauer's Into the Wild was featured on a show with Sean Penn and family members of Christopher McCandless, and it landed at #9; while Ken Follett's Pillars of the Earth is the current book club selection and the #4 top seller. Gabriel Garcia Marquez's Love in the Time of Cholera was the previous book club pick, and landed at the #6 spot this week.
While these 4 novels have seen their books reach the highest success, Oprah's latest Harpo Film, The Great Debaters has not had box office glory since its release Christmas day. After 2 weeks in theaters, Debaters has taken in just 22 million. Quality doesn't often bring quantity as is seen by Oscar favorite Atonement, which after 5 weeks has yet to reach the 20 million mark. It's a hard pill to swallow when Alvin and the Chipmunks can pull in 8 times more than Denzel Washington, Forest Whitaker and Oprah -- with only 2 extra weeks in theaters.
