The Man Who Turned Blue:
14 years ago Paul was a man with fair skin, rather normal - but now, his entire body is blue!
Paul told his story of seeing an ad in a magazine for a colloidal silver generator to treat certain conditions, one being petroleum poisoning that a friend of his had. Paul bought the machine and began visiting his friend daily to drink a glass of the colloidal silver. Paul didn't have petroleum poisoning but drank the silver as a kind of moral support - and he figured it may benefit him in some way as well. Paul did experience a benefit - after just 3 days his acid reflux disease disappeared, so he continued to take it.
Paul says that it wasn't until he started to apply it to his face that his skin began to turn blue. Paul was taking care of his aging parents and his stress caused him to develop dermatitis. He had seen the effects of the silver when he applied it to scratches in the past, so he put it on his damaged skin. Paul described that the change happened so gradually that people didn't notice at first, but a friend he hadn't seen in a while alerted him to his blue skin.
While Paul's condition is permanent, he is engaged to a woman he met after he turned blue, a friend of his sister - she says she loves the man inside.
Laura Reduces Her "Real Age":
Laura first appeared on the Dr. Oz episode featuring the anti-aging checklist. Laura's "Real Age" test was taken, and instead of her actual 44 years, Laura was almost 60.
Laura was sent to NYC to have a one-on-one with Dr. Oz. Laura described her mother's health after quitting a 3 pack a day smoking habit. Her mother gained 100 pounds after she quit which eventually lead to her death - part of Laura believed that had her mother kept smoking she wouldn't have died. Laura's entire life changed at that point and she rationalized her own smoking. Dr. Oz introduced her to a patient getting triple bypass surgery.
Hugh was having surgery due to his unhealthy eating, smoking and high stress - similar to Laura's lifestyle. Stress is Laura's biggest obstacle as she takes on the pain and stress from other people.
To get a look at Laura's health, she was sent to the Cleveland Clinic for a battery of tests. Dr. Roizen was also on the show to let Laura know that her conditions are reversible. Since the tests, Laura is getting in her 10,000 steps a day and has changed her diet to all the foods that Dr. Oz has recommended. One problem Laura does have is osteoporosis due to vitamin D deficiency, which affects 60% of the country.
A Breathe Free Challenge Update:
3 of the guests that appeared on the Breathe Free show came back to update their progress. Gail, Leon and Wendie continued their video diaries which showed just how difficult the first few days can be after quitting. All 3 talked about quitting like they were losing a beloved friend, but each shared that every day was getting easier.
Dr. Oz stated that the process is not about bashing smokers, but about loving them through the steps. Many who watched the first show are breathing free, and many more have set their quit date. Wendie and Gail shared the support they have gotten from the Oprah.com message boards.
A Woman with Multiple Orgasms:
Marcy shared with Dr. Oz that each time she has sex she has multiple orgasms - between 8 and 18 - and that all of the women on her mother's side of the family can as well. Marcy was wondering if it is hereditary and if it is harmful. Dr. Oz explained that it is likely that it is hereditary and it is not causing her any trouble. 15% of women actually experience multiple orgasms while 30% have trouble even having one.
Treating Facial Hair in Women:
Jaymi's question for Dr. Oz involves the hair growth on her face. Jaymi says she plucks, bleaches, shaves and uses facial cream, but she has to take care of it every day. Dr. Oz stated that the treatments she has been using are fine, but that she needs to get to the root of the problem - why it is actually happening. Dr. Oz suggested having testing done to check her hormones and to seek treatment from her doctor instead of hiding it.
A Dr. Oz Episode Inspires Action:
When Jodi first saw Dr. Oz on the Oprah Show in 2004, she was in shock to hear him describe colon and bowel troubles like he was talking about just her. When Dr. Oz pointed out cancer in the colon and listed symptoms of diarrhea, bleeding, weight loss and fatigue, she knew she had to act on her instinct.
Jodi scheduled a colonoscopy and was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer. After surgery, radiation and chemotherapy, Jodi is now cancer free. She appeared on the show to thank Dr. Oz and Oprah for the information to take action and to be there for her husband and 2 small children.
Homework from Dr. Oz - Prescription America:
Dr. Oz's first assignment for America is to stop drinking soft drinks for 2 weeks. He explained that studies have linked the obesity epidemic to just 100 calories per day; most soft drinks have 160 calories per 12oz. can. Adding to that, Dr. Oz stated that most people take in an extra 125 calories during a meal when they drink these sugary beverages. Lowering caloric intake by 100 calories a day can add up to 15 pounds over the course of a year.
Dr. Oz suggested substituting other carbonated beverages for the bubbles and coffee or green tea for the caffeine - those are not the issues, it's the sugar that's the enemy.
