The Dr. Phil Show films at Paramount Studios in Los Angeles.
The first nationally syndicated episode of The Dr. Phil Show aired on September 16, 2002.
The Beginning - The Oprah Winfrey Show:
Oprah Winfrey and Dr. Phil McGraw first became acquainted during Oprah's Texas court case with beef cattle farmers in 1995. After Dr. Phil helped Oprah win her lawsuit, she invited him on the show to share his expert advice on relationship and life issues in 1998. Due to the response that Dr. Phil received from the viewers, Oprah began to have regular episodes each Tuesday, bringing on guests for Dr. Phil to help, while also offering generalized tips for viewers dealing with similar situations.
Tuesdays with Dr. Phil became a huge success for The Oprah Winfrey Show and questions from viewers were flooding in. Fans of Dr. Phil enjoyed his style and the way he would "tell it like it is" instead of sugar-coating a situation. Seeing the response Dr. Phil received from the audience, it was a natural next step for him to get his own talk show. Dr. Phil continued to appear each week with Oprah until his own show, produced by Harpo, began in 2002.
The Dr. Phil Show has a standard daytime talk show format where the host speaks on a stage with or without guests in front of an audience of a few hundred people. The set of Dr. Phil's show is very similar to that of The Oprah Winfrey Show with a very minimal design and simple chairs in the center of the stage. The Dr. Phil Show runs for 60 minutes, Monday through Friday during the regular television season of September through May.
Dr. Phil Show Topics:
The Dr. Phil Show covers a variety of topics from day to day, focusing on lifestyle issues and concerns. Episodes regularly consist of guest and viewer questions dealing with the subjects of:
- Weight loss
- In-laws or adult children and their parents
- Blended families
- Drug and alcohol abuse
- Physical abuse
- Mental health
- Money and finances
In addition to regular 1 time hour long episodes, Dr. Phil has also in the past included season long segments on the show which give viewers a more in-depth look at a specific family or subject. The Dr. Phil Family provides viewers with the opportunity to become more acquainted with a family situation and struggles each time they return back to the show, watching how they use the advice given to make changes in their lives. The Dr. Phil House is presented much like a reality show where residents have their daily lives recorded as they live in a house together in attempts to work out their problems.
