Guests:
Oprah welcomed six cast members from the comedy series Modern Family and a real modern family with a twist -- a mother who fathered her own children.
Show Summary:
Inspired by the wildly successful comedy Modern Family and the voice it has given to familial differences across the country, Oprah welcomed a couple who have created their own modern family unit that defies what some would consider "normal" -- even though they are a two parent home raising two children.
Christine and Lisa are a lesbian couple who conceived their twins using IVF, like many American's, but the twist to the story is that Christine actually fathered his children, using sperm he had frozen before he transitioned from male to female.
Special Highlights:
This episode featured the following highlights:
- America has fallen for the comedy Modern Family and it's take on different people who come together to love and support one another, no matter what.
- Real life modern couple Christine and Lisa and their twins are a true example of the show's theme that we are all more alike than we are different.
- Lisa expressed the idea of accepting differences so eloquently when she explained her relationship with her father, saying, "I don't need his approval, I just need his love."
- Oprah also spoke with the cast via satellite about their feelings regarding the success at the Emmy Awards, along with a number of clips, and a behind-the-scenes look with Ali Wentworth.
What to Take Away from the Show:
This episode began by showing Christine as a successful doctor, who struggled to find a partner because of her long working hours -- a story that many American's face on the quest to find love. As Christine and Lisa shared more about their life together and Christine's past, each piece still revealed how their story is very similar to that of many people watching the show -- looking for love, settling down, struggling to start a family, conceiving and raising happy children, building a loving home and family -- but with a modern twist.
