Dr. Oz's Final Show:
After 5 years and 55 shows, Dr. Oz appeared for the final time as a regular guest on The Oprah Show to start his own, The Dr. Oz Show in the fall. As a teacher and healer, America's Doctor has been able to provide viewers with open and accessible medicine in their own homes.
What Happens When Guests Go Home?:
Oprah has often wondered what happens to guests once they would leave the show after asking an embarrassing question. In October of 2007, Michelle asked if it was possible to be allergic to her husbands sperm. In May of 2005, Maureen asked about the shape of her stool and hemorrhoids. In February of 2008, Marcy wondered why she could have 8-18 orgasms each time she had sex. Oprah welcomed back each of these guests via Skype to see how their reception was back home once leaving the show. Each woman shared that they were well received - that many other people in their community had similar questions.
Oprah commended the woman and stated how proud she was that they were able to find the courage to ask difficult questions on national television. Maureen especially changed the relationship of Dr. Oz and Oprah - once poop was on the table, anything was fair game.
Dr. Oz and Oprah - Funny Moments:
Oprah shared clips of funny moments with Dr. Oz including the time in November of 2007 when he was describing a condition and said to Oprah, "you be the penis." In November of 2006 was when Dr. Oz revealed that a man who loses 35lbs would gain an inch of penis length.
In February of 2007, Dr. Oz made the comment that the "vagina is a self-cleaning oven; you don't want to put anything in there."
Dr. Oz on the Purple Gloves:
In a taped clip, Dr. Oz shared how he loved when Oprah would have to put on a pair of purple gloves and examine a brain, heart, or intestine with him. Going through airport security with the organs was no simple task, and Dr. Oz described a look in the employees eyes like Dr. Oz was a serial killer. One of his favorite moments involving organs was the time he took the camera pill and showed the images that were taken inside his body.
Knowledge from Dr. Oz Saves Lives:
Oprah surprised Dr. Oz with some of the viewers he helped save by providing them with useful medical knowledge to take control of their own health.
Katherine watched the show on medical mistakes and knew then that after having a double mastectomy, the doctor had missed the original tumor. With the tumor now removed, Katherine said that she can see the human error of her doctor and forgive him for his mistake.
Sandra shared with Dr. Oz that she scheduled a colonoscopy after watching his show even though she didn't have symptoms. The test came back that Sandra had cancer, but she was able to discover it early.
After watching a show on men's health, Brad did a self-exam on his testicals and found a lump. Discovering the cancer early enough allowed Brad to have surgery to remove it and he is healthy today.
Karen had a heart attack 6 weeks ago and declared that she knew that the jaw pain she was experiencing was a symptom because of watching a show with Dr. Oz. Karen was able to make it to the ER and was treated because she knew that it was a heart attack.
After seeing a show on skin cancer, Shay was checked and discovered she had cancer. Because of Dr. Oz she was treated and is now cancer free.
Dr. Oz Inspires Weight Loss:
Dr. Oz has inspired many people to take charge of their health and start losing weight. Some of the most memorable weight loss guests include Jillian from May of 2006 who used to consume huge amounts of soda a day, but lost 50lbs and is a regular runner. In November of 2007 Dr. Oz introduced viewers to Frank, a professional bowler who was able to change his life and lose more than 100lbs.
Oprah wanted to introduce Dr. Oz to other people who had also changed their life because of his education on health. James and Kim entered the stage and shared their stories.
James was able to lose 115lbs and quit smoking after Dr. Oz taught him the importance of knowledge being the key to making better choices. Kim was scared into losing weight when Dr. Oz stated that most people who reach 400lbs will not lose the weight. At 332lbs, Kim was ready to make the change so that she did not prove that statistic to be true. Kim was able to lose 164lbs and started by simply walking 30 minutes a day.
Dr. Oz on Randy Pausch:
Dr. Oz shared that Randy Pausch, the professor who gave his last lecture at Carnegie Mellon after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, was one of his heroes.
Randy passed away in July of 2008 and up until his death focused on the fun and beauty of life. Leaving behind his wife Jai and 3 small children, Randy was able to capture his legacy in the video of his lecture and the book he wrote based on the talk.
Jai appeared on the show via Skype from Virginia and was at first very emotional since she hadn't seen or heard Randy in a while - the clips reminded her of the painful experience she and her children have had. Jai shared that they are doing well and have found a rhythm to their lives.
Dr. Oz in New Orleans for Hurricane Katrina:
In 2005 Dr. Oz ventured to New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina to do his part to help the victims and he brought Oprah's cameras along on the trip. During his visit, he explained that the sites in the airport and outside the convention were unlike anything he had ever seen while practicing medicine.
One of the smallest victims, an unnamed baby boy, was someone that deeply touched Dr. Oz and has not been an event he has soon forgotten. Oprah surprised Dr. Oz once again and revealed that one of her producers had found that baby boy, and welcomed 3.5 year-old Stanley to the show!
Saying Goodbye to Dr. Oz:
To end the show, Oprah also thanked Dr. Michael Roizen, who Dr. Oz said is like a brother to him. Dr. Oz expressed that his experience on the show became like talking to family and sharing truth that people can believe in.
Some of the last memories to be shown included a May 2007 episode where Oprah held a tapeworm, November of 2007 when she drank a shot of cod liver oil, and April of 2007 when Dr. Oz introduced the neti pot.
Finally, Oprah put on her last pair of purple gloves and revealed 2 glasses of champagne to toast Dr. Oz.
