Simon Cowell on American Idol:
Now in its 7th season, American Idol is a huge hit. Judge Simon Cowell shared with Oprah that he didn't think the show would be a success. While early on Simon was the judge everyone loved to hate, he has become more likeable, though he still says what people wish they could.
Oprah's cameras had a rare behind-the-scenes look at Simon's trailer and backstage. Simon shared where he sits to watch rehearsals, gets his make-up done, keeps his favorite drinks and even takes a nap if necessary.
Simon explained that he felt the 5th season of the show turned into a popularity contest instead of talent - the year Taylor Hicks won. According to Simon, last year was the weakest season yet, but this year is looking pretty good. Simon's front-runners include both Brooke, Jason and the Davids.
Simon Shares Talent Leona Lewis:
After winning The X Factor, the British version of American Idol, 22 year old Leona Lewis signed a record deal with Clive Davis and started to climb the charts in England. Simon shared that she transformed into a superstar on the show. After a performance on Oprah's stage, Leona stated that it's a big compliment to be compared to so many great singers and that her dream has really come true. Leona's album Spirit will be released April 8, 2008.
Simon Shares Talent Terry Fator:
Terry Fator has been a ventriloquist for over 20 years, though successful hasn't been a word to describe his career until now. With the encouragement of his wife, Terry decided to become a contestant on America's Got Talent and to his surprise, he won the competition and 1 million dollars! For his performance, Terry showed off what he does best - singing, ventriloquist style. With his friends Walter T. Airedale, Julius and Winston the Impersonating Turtle performed songs from Garth Brooks, Marvin Gaye and the Bee Gees.
Terry is performing at the Hilton in Las Vegas as well as around the country.
The Big Give Episode 3 Recap and Interview:
After a recap of episode 3 of the Big Give, Carlana joined Oprah for her first interview with judge Jamie Oliver. Carlana enjoyed her time on the show, but felt that she didn't get the chance to do everything that she could have for others. Jamie stated that it was the longest deliberation for the judges, but that they could see the struggle between 2 strong women. Carlana likes to be in control and found it hard to sit back for the mission - Oprah and Jamie pointed out that Rachael was stirring, but Carlana was biting - even though she didn't see it that way.
Simon's Big Give:
Simon introduced Oprah's viewers to the Stoen family from Minnesota. Madeline was diagnosed with cancer at 3 and her family drives over 100 miles each day to get her the medical treatment she needs. Madeline was diagnosed in February and has since already lost 10 pounds, only 3 weeks into the process, the family is already struggling financially.
Simon chose the family to do his own big give and as of the afternoon of the show, the family's mortgage of $162,000 had been paid off by Simon. He also told the family that they can look to him for help in the future as well.
Idol Gives Back:
After last year's success with Idol Gives Back which raised 76 million dollars, American Idol will be hosting the event again on April 9, 2008. The proceeds from the fundraiser go to help children in both Africa and the US and to create awareness. Simon has seen through the Idol event and Oprah's work, that it feels good to help others, an idea he thinks will catch on around the world.
